The appearance of this tree is of slender, smooth curving branches on a long trunk.

It is usually the last tree to come into leaf in spring and one of the earliest to lose its leaves in the autumn. The Ash produces grey buds that quickly turn to soot black whereas some other ashes go brown. Situated in opposite pairs, the leaves are mitre shaped and have a serrated edge. Side leaves are generally stalk less.

A highly attractive aspect of this tree is the bark. It’s pale grey in colour and consists of a regular pattern of shallow criss-crossing networks of ridges.

The wood is extremely strong; lending itself to a variety of purposes such as hockey sticks, rudders and cricket stumps, but especially handles for tools and modern wood flooring and office furniture. When dried it burns with a clear blue flame making it a sought after commodity for winter fuel, but it will still burn if green.

Ash is tolerant of most soils and most sites including chalk, but flourishes on a lime rich soil, or moist, but well drained, fertile soils.

It has an overall maximum height of 30m or can be coppiced to form small bushes. |
The Sweet Chestnut is a long-lived, fast growing, stately tree native to Britain. Sweet Chestnut''s have an average height expectancy of 8m after 10 years ,12m after 20 years and an overall maximum height of 30m. The branches spread widely if left to grow, alternatively it can be coppiced to form small bushes, which have been introduced into Britain, widely planted and naturalised.

The leaves are amongst the longest found in the UK measuring at 10 - 25cm in length, toothed and hairless; however, when the leaves are young they have hair on the underside of the leaf, in autumn these leaves will turn a golden yellow then orange.

In July, catkins can be found on the tree. There are both male and female flowers, with there being fewer females on each catkin. The female flowers mature into spiny green fruit, which then produce 1-3 edible chestnuts. The bark is dark brown and has deep vertical fissures, which spiral up the trunk.

Sweet Chestnut is commonly found in the southern parts of Europe, Meditteranean and Asia Minor and it was first introduced and grown in the UK by Romans. It grows well on light and acidy soils and dislikes chalky, heavy soiled environments but is also a drought resistant tree.

Bark from this tree is extremely useful as it is 20% lighter than oak. It can be used out doors, for example as fencing, without being treated even if in contact with damp soil conditions. It can also be used indoors as panelling and beams. If nails or screws need to be entered into the wood the hole is best drilled to prevent splitting.

Constantly throwing up suckers to form new trees, the aspen pioneers the colonisation of new ground, particularly in the Scottish Highlands.

Its quivering foliage which turns amber-yellow in autumn makes it an instantly recognisable tree and often planted garden tree - althought its suckering habit can cause it to spread.

It was believed that the constant trembling of the leaves indicated the trees guilt at having provided the wood used for the cross on which Christ was crucified.

Flowers in February with attractive catkins.

A conical tree, slender in outline when young, it''s branches are more horizontal than those of other pines.
The needles are long, arranged in pairs on the twig and sometimes twisted.
This tree is a variety of Austrian pine but has much greater value as a timber tree because of its thinner branches and straight cylindrical trunk. Commercial forests of this pine are to be found on light sandy soils not suited to the spruces.
As well as its use in forestry, it is also planted for shelter, and in parks and railway banks. | | 9.9900 | 0.0000 | 0.0000 | 0 | 0 | Default_Item | 180 | | Corsican Pine - Good city tree | corsican, pine, pinus, nigra, maritima, european, confier | | | | Display_Item | | BIGTREES | 0 | | 28327.jpg | 28327.jpg | images/shop_image3/default.gif | images/shop_image4/default.gif | | | 1 | Pinus nigra maritima | | | bebf370a-c900-4c90-bfea-d8dbc8798c7a | 4eccde54-5701-4c9a-8fa6-3bc30aaf5641 | 0 | 0 | 04/05/2005 16:49:00 | 04/05/2005 00:00:00 | 13/10/2007 18:24:00 | 04/05/2005 16:54:00 | 1 | 0 | 0 | | 0 | | 0 | 0 | 04/05/2005 00:00:00 | | LIVE | 0 | | 451282 | 224314 | 28327 | 1 | None | Default | 18/10/2025 18:40:53 | BIGTREES | 9.9900 |

The long paired needles are sharp and stiff, coarser in texture than those of other pines. They are grouped in distinct whorls on the branchlets.
As an ornamental tree the Austrian pine is more successful than as a timber tree - the wood is coarse and large knots weaken the wood.
It can withstand exposure to salt-laden winds and industrial pollution so it is often planted as a windbreak or screen; it also flourishes on most dry soils particularly those overlying chalk. | | 9.9900 | 0.0000 | 0.0000 | 0 | 0 | Default_Item | 180 | | Austrian Pine - grows happily in sand or by coast | austrian, pine, pinus, nigra, confier, european, coast, sand | | | | Display_Item | | BIGTREES | 0 | | 28305.jpg | 28305.jpg | images/shop_image3/default.gif | images/shop_image4/default.gif | | | 1 | Pinus nigra nigra | | | 6d8eafbe-1ac8-4856-95da-d04b0a09548c | fac686bd-d326-408c-af6c-9a82cc58b95b | 0 | 0 | 04/05/2005 16:17:00 | 04/05/2005 00:00:00 | 13/10/2007 18:22:00 | 04/05/2005 16:22:00 | 1 | 0 | 0 | | 0 | | 0 | 0 | 04/05/2005 00:00:00 | | LIVE | 0 | | 451284 | 224314 | 28305 | 1 | None | Default | 18/10/2025 18:40:54 | BIGTREES | 9.9900 |
