This dark, rough looking, heavy branched tree attains a height of around 100ft (30m).
The long paired needles are sharp and stiff, coarser in texture than those of other pines. They are grouped in distinct whorls on the branchlets.
As an ornamental tree the Austrian pine is more successful than as a timber tree - the wood is coarse and large knots weaken the wood.
It can withstand exposure to salt-laden winds and industrial pollution so it is often planted as a windbreak or screen; it also flourishes on most dry soils particularly those overlying chalk.
